I was invited to visit the newly renovated and refurbished Resorts World Langkawi on their 3 days 2 nights Media FAM Trip. I’ve never been on one before, and therefore, didn’t know what to expect. So imagine to my pleasant surprise, I arrived at the resort with a bus full of people. Almost 40 of us!
It has been nice making new friends, and getting to know fellow bloggers… and together, we had a lovely time at the Resorts World Langkawi. The resort has been given a new lease of life from its recent facelift — and I’m glad we were given the opportunity to experience it on this weekend getaway.
Overview
Resorts World Langkawi is located at Pantai Tengah, on the southwestern tip of Langkawi Island. It is just a stone’s throw away from the popular Cenang Beach, and has beautiful ocean-facing views of the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea. Previously known as the Awana Porto Malai since 1997; the resort has undergone extensive renovation and development — and was recently renamed Resorts World Langkawi.
Inspired by Mediterranean architectural designs with a distinctive bright yellow facade — the Resorts World Langkawi is known for its landmark white lighthouse, the charming boardwalk lining the coast, and its private marina.
The Resorts World Experience
The first thing that caught my eye upon arriving at the resort was the sea. It lured me straight to the boardwalk — there is nothing quite like seeing white yachts docked at the marina against the shining blue of the ocean. I spent so much time soaking in the beauty that I was the last to arrive for our welcome lunch!
In the evening, we were given a short presentation and briefing about the newly upgraded Resorts World Langkawi by the Hotel Manager, Mr Yap Lip Seng. It was followed by an introductory tour around the resort; ending with a visit to the spacious and opulent Presidential Suite, and access to its connecting private lighthouse. All throughout my stay, the staff were friendly and helpful — and when I needed help with some room problems, it was attended to swiftly.
The Rooms
There are 211 rooms in total at the Resorts World Langkawi. The recent renovation (2016) has enhanced the rooms with upgraded facilities and new furnishings. Guests can either choose to stay in the Deluxe Garden View rooms that face the lush greenery surrounding the resort; or the Deluxe Seaview and Premier Seaview rooms with balconies that offer a panorama of the ocean. There are also 2 brand new Signature Suites, and of course, the Presidential Suite.
During my visit, I stayed at the Seaview Room, with large windows that opened up to the ocean. My room was equipped with two double beds (there’s also a King bed with lounge chair option), TV, safe, coffee making facilities, fridge, shower with basic toiletries… as well as USB charging points, and free wifi! I liked the distinction of colors in each room type — sea view rooms are blue, and garden view rooms are orange.
The Facilities
There are three eateries at the Resorts World Langkawi. The Seagull Coffehouse serves a commendable buffet breakfast in the mornings (it just lacks an egg station), as well as Asian and International dishes throughout the day. Zest at the boardwalk provides an al-fresco dining concept, and I thoroughly enjoyed my barbecue buffet while watching the sky change colors in the evening. The boardwalk dinner has got to be one of the highlights of the resort — it is so romantic! The Lobby Lounge is a great place for a few glasses of bubbly by the sea, and the live band comes on at night.
The resort has a five-star spa, the Taman Sari Royal Heritage Spa that offers massages and treatments to pamper the body. There is also a ballroom and 6 meeting rooms, an outdoor gym, a water-sports center, as well as a swimming pool for adults, and one (with slides and water fountains) for kids. There are plans for an infinity pool in the near future!
The Sunset Cruise
Another highlight of my stay at the Resorts World Langkawi was the amazing Tropical Charters Sunset Cruise. The three-hour long cruise aboard a bright orange catamaran comes inclusive of free flow cocktails and mocktails, a barbecue buffet, natural saltwater jacuzzi (which is a net cast at the back of the boat so you can take a dip in the sea), and of course, the gorgeous views of the vast open sea.
We boarded the boat at 5pm, and I immediately plonked myself onto the mattresses in front of the boat — it’s the best place to soak up the sun, and to smell the sea breeze! I had so much fun on board that the hours passed by in the blink of an eye. I had cups of pina colada, jumped into the ocean in my white dress, took plenty of random photographs, ate a large serving of satay; and when the sun had gone down, danced on the deck to Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’, as the boat made its way back to the marina.
Things to do in Langkawi
There are many fun things to explore around Langkawi, and the resort provides assistance for tours and transport around the island. You can get a bird’s eye view of Langkawi from the top of SkyBridge, zipline across the rainforests at Umgawa Eco-Canopy Tour, visit the many museums, or spend the day sunbathing on Cenang Beach. During my media visit, we were taken for a couple of excursions to explore Langkawi. We went for a lovely boat ride along the mangrove forests of Sungai Kubang Badak; which included stops to see the mangrove trees up close, visit an old abandoned charcoal factory, and witness the hundreds of bats inside the Pinang Cave. We also had the opportunity to observe the majestic eagles swooping down and feeding, during a speedboat ride around the many smaller islands surrounding Langkawi.
At the End of the Day
This was my first Media FAM Trip after starting this travel blog more than a year ago, and it was an interesting experience traveling with such a huge group of people! I had an absolutely fun weekend getaway at the Resorts World Langkawi.
I am usually not one for oversized resorts because I have to walk really far to get from one place to another; but with boardwalk sea views like Resorts World Langkawi’s, there’s really nothing to complain about. This is a great resort to spend an island holiday with family and friends — ample space for children to run around in and lots of activities for everyone, and big enough to find your own quiet place to enjoy the beauty of the ocean.
